Today, about 95 percent of Americans use smartphones followed by an increasingly popular incline in internet web reading. However, is technology making society too dependent on devices, and curving our intellectual thinking ability? We look for answers in two articles Carr’s, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, and Jefferies, “Think digital distractions have killed our attention spans? Think again”. High technology could be affecting the brain’s concentration and focus spans. We look closely at how web-based reading is making people lose focus and challenge that textbooks are the more superior choice for reading. Lastly, is the media impacting our concentration in a negative manner? Technology could be …show more content…
Carr thinks of the media as the “conduit for most of the information that flows through my eyes and ears and into my mind”. This media technology is leaving a profound negative impact on our minds. “Media are not just passive channels of information. They supply the stuff of thought, but they also shape the process of thought. And what the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swift moving stream of particles” (Carr). Although, Jefferies argues that television media like popular Netflix series are making us focus for longer periods. According to George Potts, “it’s strange how some series can demand so much of viewers and yet this doesn’t put people off in the way that a difficult novel would… I’d say complex television is taking the place of the novel we used to read in bed at night” (Jeffries). More so, there have been higher thinking changes made in modern day TV series plots. For example, lack of flashback in many shows, like Breaking Bad, make the viewer put more effort in paying attention and focusing. This is to comprehend what and why something is happening in the show. We become so engulfed in the shows we find ourselves sucked in, glued to the TV, and spending a whole day watching our favorite series. However, I do not find watching television on the same intellectual link as deep thinking or reading. Therefore, watching a show play out isn’t as difficult to do as reading text from a book all day. I agree more with Carr, the internet is affecting the way we are learning. We focus on the main points rather than reading the whole thing. This wealth of information provided by the media is hindering us, making us a society poor of attention and
