Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919, January 31. Jackie Robinson was born into a family of sharecroppers and is the youngest of his five siblings. After his father abandoned the family in 1920, Jackie Robinson moved to Pasadena, California with his mother. In Pasadena, the family is very poor and Jackie Robinson’s mother had to work a series of jobs to support the family. In 1935, Jackie Robinson enrolled in John Muir High School and was influenced by his older brother, Mack, who won a silver medal in the 1936 Olympics. Jackie Robinson performed greatly in football, track, baseball, and basketball at John Muir High School and continued on in college. He was honorably discharged from the army and became a basketball coach in Texas. Jackie Robinson started his professional career in baseball in 1945 and joined the Negro League team. In August 1945, Jakie Robinson was added to the Royals and then to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1946. Playing with the Brooklyns, Jackie Robinson earned a lot of awards. For example, he won the “Rookie of the Year” in 1947, “National League Most Valuable Player” in 1949, and a World Series champion in 1955. However, Jackie Robinson faced a lot of racist taunts and blackmail throughout his baseball career. Even after the other Brooklyn players hugged him and said that they accept Jackie Robinson as a teammate, Jackie Robinson still got deathmails and racist taunts over his life. Jackie Robinson retired from baseball in 1957 and worked as a business executive, active member of the NAACP. Jackie Robinson died in 1972 at the age of 53 from a heart attack at his home in Stamford, Connecticut.
