November fourth, 1979 five hundred Muslim students took over the United States Embassy in Iran 66 American representatives were held hostage for 444 days president Jimmy Carter called the hostages ‘’Victims of terrorism and anarchy ‘’ also saying that ‘’The United States will not yield to blackmail.’’

President Carter decided to stand up as president and make a rescue attempt; he was going to try to recuperate the captured Americans. It was clear that the shah had lost the support of his people, but the president hoped an alliance of the abundant opponents might be formed. The situation was only expected to last a short time but it dragged on for 444 days and it seemed longer because of the wait and the shah couldn’t leave the United States because of the treatment he was getting. The Carter administration was seen as useless and vain in handling the crisis but finally after the long wait in 1980 the rescue was finally made some people called it a botched rescue and some people called it a miracle but after the wait of the hostages the rescue was finally attempted and was a success only to reinforce these views President Carter was not reelected in the 1980 presidential race only because people blamed him for the Iran hostage crisis Carter inherited the situation that was brought to him and he and advisers made the worst of it he has a hard time deciding whether to take the advice of his national advisor after it was known that the shah was sick how did he do it? Some people ask, but the question remains but in the end it all came out to a success
