In the book A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park, two stories are parallely told. Salva’s story begins when he was a young boy who had the flee his village during the Sudanese Civil War. He spends the his childhood and teen years walking to safety and living in various refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya. Salva is selected to live in New York, and he starts an organization to provide clean drinking water for South Sudan. This leads him to meet Nya, who is a young girl living in South Sudan. Nya spends her day walking to get clean water for her family, and as a result cannot receive an education. Both characters remain positive despite their dire situations. Determination leads both Salva and Nya to finding hope and purpose in their lives.
