Fishing With Live Minnows

Fishing with live minnows is one of my favorite bass fishing techniques.

While living in Arizona my friend Steve Brown (the best fisherman I have ever fished with) taught me how to fish with live bait for smallmouth bass. I had used live bait as a kid fishing the river, local lakes and ponds but as an adult had completely overlooked it. To be honest, I had fallen into the belief that artificial bait was the only way to catch bass. After seeing how affective live bait fishing could be. I was hooked. You can choose to be lazy, and just fish a spot or two while sitting back and relaxing, or you can be very active, and cover a lot of area. One of the great benefits of fishing with live minnows, or worms is you can always be surprised by some of the other species that are attracted to live bait. I continue working break lines to find the depth the fish are active. I personally find dragging a minnow behind or beside a boat is a very relaxing way to fish, while still allowing me cover alot of water. If I find an area that seems to be holding bass, I will continue to repeat the process of moving through the area at the appropriate depth and speed of the boat.

Some days the best way to cover an area is to anchor. This allows an area to be fished with a slower presentation while covering a lot of different depth. Changing the way the minnow is hooked and the distance from the split-shot to the hook is a variance that could make the difference between a day with no fish and lots of
