In To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson, an African American resident of Maycomb, is innocent of the rape of Mayella Ewell. Throughout the trial, clear evidence points to the defendant's innocence. For example, the defendant reached around, ran his fingers under his left arm and lifted it, guided his arm toward the bible, and his rubber-like left hand struggled to make contact with the black binding (pg 216). The witness/Mayella’s father is able to use his left hand. In comparison, the defendant has trouble using it.
