Opening Statement for Mayella Ewell Good afternoon members of the jury, I am Evalie Gall, and it is my pleasure to represent Maycomb County and to serve as a prosecutor on this important date. Ms. Mayella Ewell stands for perjury. The defendant was dishonest while under a sworn oath. She committed this crime so she would get out of any repercussions of the actions that occurred. Mayella Ewell swore that she would give the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Ms. Mayella Ewell is guilty of the lies she told and should be punished accordingly. The trial started on August 26, 1936. “Didn't you ever ask him to come inside the fence before? She responded with “I did not, I certainly did not” (Lee 209). Atticus asks Mayella “Is this the man who raped you?” she says it most certainly is and then Atticus asks “How” I don't know how he did it, but he did it- I said it all happened so fast”(Lee211). Mayella tells the jury that Tom Robinson “choked her” and the jury proceeds to ask Mayella questions like “he blacked your left eye with his right fist right” and Mayella responds with “I ducked and it glanced, that’s what it did. I ducked and glanced off” (Lee212). “Who beat you up”? Tom Robinson or your father?” Mayella didn't answer the question”
