There are many stressors that go into being into the military that can result in self harm. Beginning in 2005, the incidence of suicide deaths in the US military began to skyrocket (LeardMann). Suicide is a continuing problem in the military and personal are trying to find ways to reduce stress and try to prevent suicide. There are currently over 900 prevention programs.
Military suicides started getting recorded during 1980 and have been an issue ever since. There was a record high in 2009 with 301 suicides. Of the 915 active-duty non-fatal suicide attempts in 2011, 432 of them were in the army, 241 in the air force, 156 marines, and 86 in the navy. Almost 60% of these people had no history of deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan. This statistic proves that all military personal are affected in some sort of way whether they are deployed or not. They might have lost a close friend in battle or worse. (Wood)

Military sexual trauma is experiences of sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment that a veteran experienced during his or her military service (Military Sexual Trauma). According to a testimony presented at a hearing for the House of Committee of Veterans’ Affairs, 23% of female users of the Veterans Affairs health care system reported having experienced sexual assault while in the military (Mitka). After experiencing military sexual trauma, many women feel depressed or have other difficulties. Both men and women can experience military sexual trauma.
