Group Description
The group included in this discussion is comprised of six people who are students in a Social Work 420 Course at St. Augustine College, five Mexican and one Puerto Rican women, all between 29 and 44 years of age. D., a 38 year old single mother with 3 kids. I work full time and go to school part time. I was born in Chicago, moved to Mexico at 1 and a half years, and came back at the age of 16. I have 3 siblings, my mother still alive but my father died 36 years ago. I am living in Hanover Park and have been to an Alcoholic anonymous group only once.
I have found that in our group we have in common that we all are college students. The biggest differences I could find are the ages. We all are between 25 to 45 years old, some of us have only one parent alive and the others have both still living. One of the observers, C. M., described me as the Interpersonal problem solver and the encourager because she felt I valued each member’s opinion on how group should proceed instead of resisting it. I asked everyone questions and made an effort to involve the new member (C.M. citation).
The comments continued, and group members shared more about their personal lifes. C.M. mentioned that another member of the group, M. A., was the tension reliever because she said she doesn’t even remember how long she has been married (C.M.
