The Federal Bureau of Investigation says the NSA needs permission to collect this type of information from all citizens but because of the mass number of people in the United States, this is impossible in a reasonable amount of time (DiLascio, 2014). So the NSA takes the easy way and bypasses the rules continuing to collect the information illegally. In response, many citizens think NSA monitoring is wrong and action needs to be taken to regulate or stop NSA spying or it will just keep getting worse (Bray, 2014). Without regulation, NSA is able to decide what they think is best for the U.S. (Schneier, 2013). This is why many Americans have requested the NSA surveillance operations be investigated further. During one of the earlier investigations, a secret four page court order required Verizon to give the information of millions of customers to the NSA on a daily basis. However, in 2013, U.S. district Judge Richard J. Leon said that the mass amount of phone records the NSA have been collecting is in violation of privacy rights and since then the Congress requires the NSA to provide them with reports on how they collect and use the information they collect (DiLascio, …show more content…
With the police, Armed Forces, CIA, FBI and all the other organizations that protect us, the U.S. does not need more protection. They take information from citizens without them knowing just as the other organizations do so what is one more secretive organization doing to better the protection of citizens. Citizens of the United States are given certain rights to freedom and privacy when they are born and are increasingly being watched over the years. American’s citizen’s freedom is already being taken so regulation of the NSA and how they take information needs to occur. Is it necessary to take phone and internet records from someone with a clean record? If someone is a good citizen, they should be given the reward to privacy and once they have done wrong, the right to privacy can be taken (Honoroff, 2013). Also, since 9/11 only sixty terrorist attacks have been stopped by the NSA while a majority of the other attacks were stopped by the Traditional investigation methods such as tips from law enforcement, the use of informants and targeted surveillance (DiLascio, 2014). Using targeted surveillance instead of collecting information from everyone in the country works better because they target people who are suspicious or know for wrong doing, not just the average joes in small
