Eleven million lives were massacred over a decade. Together, the Nazi Regime controlled by Adolf Hitler deliberately killed millions of lives. Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, people opposing Hitler, and those who were considered to be the perfect race were sent to concentration camps. The Holocaust marked one of the world’s darkest event, that people have suffered through. In Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie is the character defeated by forces outside of his control. The novel is told from Elie’s perspective. He is a teenage boy from Siget. He is one of many that were derived from youth and family, when forced to leave from by the Nazi authority. Prior to incarceration, Elie is fascinated to embrace Judaism; desiring to learn about the Bible and the synagogue. Losing simple rights to humanity has fueled his ambition to survive. Elie’s perseverance was initiated during selections. The desire to live causes Elie to draw positive attention, such as running faster and looking lively, so he can live until the next selection. More importantly, the will to live influences Elie not to resist again Nazi authority. Since Elie did not resist his urge to say goodbye to his siblings and mother was became defeated. However, the defeat allowed him to survive. Elie once stated, “Hitler was the only one to keep his promises.” The will to live has brainwashed Elie into thinking Hitler was a hero.
