Americans eat eat a lot of meat. Nearly every fast-food restaurant bases their menu around some type of meat. In 2007, America was second in the world for its total meat consumption, and in 2010, America was third in the world in its consumption of beef and veal, 4th in its consumption of chicken, and 8th in its consumption of pork(ProCon). Americans told by someone who was told the same, meat is the best source of protein and if someone wants to have healthy growth, muscle mass and energy, then people need to eat as much meat as they can. Many American families eat “lunch meat” for their lunches, especially with how convenient it is. Many children grew up with eating a “happy meal” from McDonald's, which contained a cheeseburger. Because of the extreme popularity of meat, those who choose to eat a meat-free diet may have some difficulty sustaining it constantly. In comparison to other countries, the majority of America’s population are in suburban or urban areas, where there are few non-meat foods such as, grains, vegetables and fruits. Many people visit grocery stores that carry these foods, but most are in limited quantity and quality and have some form of genetic modification. Fruits and vegetables can be quite expensive as well, especially if someone wants organic fruits and vegetables. The quantity of meat can be great in comparison to plant foods and can be manufacture in many different ways.
