Find two examples where someone was injured because of public disclosure of facts about them.
The first example that I am going to discuss with the class, is one that involves the highly controversial former British tabloid newspaper (itself closed due to privacy cases lodged against it in the High Court). This case involved Formula One figure Max Mosley. This case, although the European Union later rejected his claim, he did win a case against the News of the World newspaper with compensation received more than 60,000 British Pounds, about US84,000 (Holmwood & Fitzsimmons, 2008).
In the second case to be discussed, is not an individual case per se, however, it has impacted private information involving many cases. In this case, a researcher from Cambridge University, Aleksandr Kogan created a testing application which was approved by Facebook.
This wasn’t a test application at all, instead, a system was created to harvest personal information from Facebook. The company was deceived into allowing this to take place o their own Social Media Network.
The consequences are enormous, not only did this impact those people that have stored private data on Facebook, but the company itself has had its reputation, the possibly its business tarnished.
