The Role of Informatics Nurse
The field of nursing is unique. It has allowed the nursing profession to flourish and branch out to different expert areas such as advanced nursing practice, legal nursing, and nurse anesthetist. One of the area that nursing has explored is nursing informatics. American Nurses Association (ANA) defined nursing informatics (NI) as an integration of nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate data (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2012). The purpose of an informatics nurse ranges from a program developer to administrator. As a project manager, the informatics nurse analyzes, develop, design, and evaluate data gathered to improve quality of care (Roussel, 2013). During the improvement of electronic medical record on Meditech, a pilot study was done with one to the corporation’s hospital where nurses were part of building the new documentation system through their feedback. Rigorous training and orientation were done with the group of nurses during the implementation process. Although nurses did not have formal training as nurse informatics, the statement made by Staggers and Nelson (2009) that “ In a way, all of us are already informatics nurses” has truth in it (Ar, 2003). The input of the nurses was collected, carefully analyzed and improved the documentation system. Nurses functioned as researchers to build and enhance the program. Once the recommendation from the frontline nurses was considered, the product was tested in other hospitals before the system-wide roll out. During the rollout of the documentation system, training was provided to the end users. Comments and suggestions from the staff were once again collected to enhance the program. On the top right-hand corner, there is a search box where one can search for the specific topic of concern. For the exercise, typing a particular topic such as emergency department, it also showed different language such as Spanish. The word emergency department showed various issues related to the emergency. Topics related to emergency visits, meaningful use or national health statistic report are useful resources and reliable data to view trends. For individuals who are students, the information on the website is helpful data to support thesis or capstone project. It is also a useful resource to compare the organization’s statistical data from the national benchmark. The site also offers videos and powerpoint presentation that can help a layman person understand trending data and facts about the health status of the country. It is simple and easy to understand for the most part. Some videos were lengthy and not catchy which could lose the interest
