“Population based research estimates that 1 in 5 female adolescents experience physical or sexual abuse from dating partners, and approximately 10% of male high school students experience physical dating violence (Martin, Houston, Mmari, & Decker, 2012, p. 958). Teen dating violence is associated with several adverse reactions with mental and physical health. Such problems include depression, anxiety, substance and drug abuse, suicidal behavior, antisocial behaviors, and risky sexual behavior (Debnam, Waasdorp, & Bradshaw, 2016). A complete assessment should be completed in a private area. The nurse should first try building a relationship with Christina so that she feels comfortable speaking freely about her relationship. Then the conversation should move into how she’s feeling in her relationship. Specific questions that should be asked is, how do you feel about your relationship with Jake? Does he make you feel uncomfortable or scared? When he becomes angry what does he say? Does he ever hit you? Has he ever made you do something you didn’t want to do? Do you feel safe? The nurse should also complete a depression screening to find out her status so that interventions can be planned.
