Odysseus: A Definitive Hero.

Over time, many conversations have arisen questioning what defines a hero. Although this question may never reach a definitive conclusion, Odysseus is one character who truly embodies the model of a hero. The Odyssey is a thrilling narrative featuring a heroic protagonist, Odysseus, who faces numerous challenges on his perilous venture home. Throughout the course of his journey, Odysseus demonstrates attributes that define him as a hero. He is continuously faced with supernatural beings, unpredictable gods, and daunting challenges. Yet, through his bravery, nobility, and strategic mind, he rises to the occasion time and time again, earning the title of an Epic Hero. One example of his courage is when he encountered the sirens. Aware of the danger of the siren's song, which lures sailors to their demise, Odysseus devises a plan to navigate past them. This is presented when the text states, “Therefore you are to tie me up, tight as a split.lashed to the mast, and if I shout and beg to be untied, take more turns of the rope to muffle me.” Here, Odysseus explains to the crew his plan to be tied up to the boat while the oarsman row with beeswax in their ears. Willingly exposing himself to the deadly siren song is no easy task, as he is putting his life at risk for the safety of his crew. Furthermore, this shows his self-sacrifice and devotion to others while facing extreme danger. Subsequent to the passing of the sirens, Odysseus is instructed to pass the monsters, Scylla and Charybdis. He provides his crew with hope and assurance in such a tragic situation.
