Odysseus the Hero Being a hero has a lot of characteristics to it like determination, strength, wisdom, leadership, and perseverance. Having these characteristics makes heroes someone people are able to look up and aspire to be. Not only do these things help people have someone to look up to, but they also give people someone to have faith in when things get hard. That's why it's important for a hero to have a lot of these qualities and traits. Odysseus shows all of these qualities in Homer's epic poem, The Odyssey, which makes Odysseus a hero. For example, in the chapter about the cyclops, Polyphemus, Odysseus says “... My name is Nobody....” (Book 9, page...). Odysseus shows wisdom when he forms this plan because he knows his name is Nobody.
