Being able to put yourself in other people’s shoes is a key quality to healthy human communication and learning how to relate the other people. Without this skill we find ourselves in very unwanted situations. A prime example of this is in The Blind Men and The Elephant, where six blind men are sitting together discussing what an elephant might look like, this sparks up disagreements from the perceptions each have of them.
In the story The Blind Men and the Elephant, the six men get into arguments over having different ideas of what they think the Elephant looks like. Since each of them has touched a different part if the elephant, they all have different ideas of what the whole thing looks like. When they each listen to each other, they become agitated at the fact that the others seem to be mistaken. Instead of arguing and being exceedingly attached to their own views, they easily could have listened to each other and keep an open mind, realizing that they were all partially right .

We get it in our minds that we are the only ones who are right, that there can’t possibly be another way to look at things. When we do this, we disregard the importance of other people. We disregard their opinions, their thoughts and their feelings. Lack of perspectives have been the root of many conflicts in the history of the world. Many wars have began due to politicians and people in positions of power failing to communicate and listen to each other.
