OVERVIEW Students will learn that there are many obstacles to overcome while building the Panama Canal. Building the canal was costly ($350,000,000), difficult (44,000 workers at one time), and deadly, as more than 5,000 workers lost their lives from malaria, yellow fever, weather conditions, accidents, and poisonous snakes. However, the U.S. reaps many benefits from building the canal. The 40-mile-long and 10-mile-wide canal provided a passageway from the Atlantic to the Pacific that bolstered trade, shipping, travel, and military tactics. Furthermore, it not only shaved thousands of miles off the trip but also, it allowed ships to pass through in a day and a half as opposed to the two weeks it took prior, as ships did not have to sail completely …show more content…
Malaria: (noun) A mosquito-borne parasitic disease that causes high fever, severe chills, and sweating. Humid: (adjective) marked by a relatively high level of water vapor in the atmosphere. INTRODUCTION Prior to the lesson, the students were provided with a world map to color the continents and oceans. By coloring the map, it will help the students understand that by building the Panama Canal, it connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. This meant that ships would no longer have to sail around South America. There would now be a safe direct passage that would save time for shipping goods. I will begin the lesson by signaling that we are about to begin, and that everyone should put away what they are doing and should become alert and ready to learn. Next, I will ask the students what they think the lesson is going to be about, based on the picture and the title. I will discuss and ask the students what they already know about the subject. I will then review the vocabulary to ensure the students will be able to gain a better understanding and I will see what they already know about the subject so I can connect their former knowledge with the new knowledge. We will read the text and stop after reading each paragraph to
