Every once in a while she had a vague memory of her mom’s gentle push against her back as she swung back and forth on the on the swing in the backyard. The swing set was still there, but it was rusted and broken and surrounded by weeds. Her dad did the best he could in keeping up with the yard, doing the housework and taking care of Kelly, Addi, and Molly, but with his full time job at Reed's Department Store and the full time job of taking care of her mom, he didn’t have much time or energy for the other things. Kelly and Addi long ago took over the laundry and cooking duties, and now that Addi was off at college, it fell on Kelly to help her dad and look after Molly. But, though she realized her life was not “normal” it was the only life she knew.
When her mom was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, or MS as everyone called it, none of them knew exactly how it would change their lives. Little by little they had adjusted to a new normal, with their dear caretaker now in need of care. It was terribly hard on all of them, especially seeing their beloved mother slowly lose use of her legs and then her arms.
