Ava is the most optimistic 13 year old, her outlook on life is incredibly positive, she knows no stranger, sees no bad in any person she meets, and always has something friendly to say. She has this perk because Ava has no awareness of flaws in human beings. She previously stated that she has never had a conversation with an adult other than her father for longer than an hour. Therefore, has no reason to be untrusting to any adult that she meets, nor any reason to have ill-feelings towards anyone that may have bad intentions. Her siblings have an incredibly hard time coping with the death of her mother, Ava however, keeps herself poised and still tries and believes that there is good in everyone. After being rescued, Ossie eventually was sent to a psychiatrist in order to treat the voices she was hearing in her head, later diagnosed as schizophrenia. This is a very extreme case, all due to the isolation of herself so that she could avoid the heartbreak of losing her mother at such a young age.
Kiwi, the oldest, and brother of Ossie and Ava, was disappointed with the way their father Chief Bigtree was conducting business and running the park after his mother's death. His mother was the one who did all of the business at Swamplandia, she kept the flow of people in the park. Due to this, he proceeded to leave for the city, with high hopes to get a job that would allow him the opportunity to provide for his sisters financially.
