Personal Narrative: Marching Band

What do you do before a performance? When everyone is staring at you and it feels like hours are passing while you’re waiting for the music to begin, do you think about everything that has led you to that moment in time?
I remember before my first performance I had a million thoughts spinning through my mind and I heard the beginning of the song repeat in my head over and over. I’d think about how my whole family was in the stands watching me and think back to when I would come to all of my older sisters’ competitions and desperately wish someday to do the same. I started making friends in marching band and even got into my first relationship. Our second season is indoor and it’s different because we aren’t with a whole 100-person marching band this time. During this time, the color guard became very close since we were spending so much time with each other. We considered each other family. By this time I realized what a great instructor we had and how talented we all could become because of Will. Near the end of the year, the color guard always does individualized gifts for each other to celebrate the season and get spirited for Championships. It’s kind of like Secret Santa, where everyone pulls names out of a hat to find out who they have. My freshman year, I was picked by Will so he had to get me a present. Before he said who he had picked, he gave a speech about how he thought his person had incredible potential and how he can’t wait to see what kind of performer they’ll blossom into. When he revealed that it was about me, I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t know how much hope a little present could give me. It gave me determination and showed me that someone believed in me and thought I could be
