Personal Narrative: What I Learned In My English Class

Freshman year began with a rush of excitement combined with nerves and jitters. I took a deep breath as I took my first step into my English classroom, DS204. I apprehensively made my way to a seat as far from the front of the classroom as the little suite would allow. As I sat down and anxiously waited for the bell to ring, thoughts filled my head as I reminisced on the struggles I faced my 8th grade year.

I remember excelling in all of my classes... except English. I have always loved reading and writing but my 8th grade English teacher decelerated this enthusiasm. I can still remember the furrowing brow of my slender teacher passing out essay grades and seeing the C- in large red letters across the top of my paper. I loved school; I hated English. As a thriving student and athlete, commended for my achievements, I was unable to come to terms with the fact that I wasn't good at English. Yet, my conceit in my English abilities was wavering.

Fast forward to the first essay due a month into 9th grade; I was so nervous to turn in this assignment. Past negativity and discouragement and rejection created me: a nervous wreck. She handed down the papers face down. I looked to my table neighbor who was already gloating about his B+. I could barely summon the courage to flip over my dreaded English paper. As I turned the paper, my face lit up. An A? Were my eyes deceiving me? Maybe I wasn't so bad at English after all.

I fostered an impactful relationship with my English teacher that year. I was consistently receiving high marks and setting the curves my Honors English course. My confidence was finally restored. My hatred for English blossomed into an affinity for the subject. My writing developed while my reading, a consistent strength, continued to flourish. As I continued to succeed in language arts, I came upon another valuable asset;
