Being fit allows people to participate in a large variety of activities, such as riding on roller coasters, rock climbing, or even being able to walk up the stairs. Health and fitness expert, Jonathan Ross, believes that asking your clients the question, “What do...your clients really care about?” can open a lot of doors for clients to be and stay motivated. Most personal trainers will ask their clients, “What’s your end goal?” and most clients will respond with generic answers such as, “To be this specific weight in this amount of time.” Lots of trainers will never dive into a deeper discussion with their client to identify what their rooted motivators are, which is why they want to lose weight. Personal trainers that want to really motivate need to aid clients in figuring out what their “emotionally relevant goals” are so they can understand why their clients are seeing them to begin with. The “emotionally relevant goals” are the why. Figuring out the why unlocks the motivation of the client. A scenario of a trainer helping a client find their “emotionally relevant goal” is as follows. A trainer gets an extremely obese client. Obviously the client wants to lose weight, but without having a meaningful discussion with the client, the trainer will never understand why the client wants to lose weight, therefore, never unlocking the motivation. The trainer sits down and dives into why the client wants to lose weight. Through discussion, the client reveals that they want to be able to walk their daughter down the aisle at her wedding and if they keep living an unhealthy lifestyle they will have to be in a wheelchair. This is very significant information that the trainer has gotten out of their client and will serve as a huge amount of emotional motivation for the client throughout their weight loss journey.
