The Genetic Transformation of Escherichia coli bacteria cells with pGLO

Introduction According to the Life 102: Attributes of Living Systems Lab Manual, a genetic transformation takes place when a cell displays characteristics of another piece of DNA, which has usually originated from another organism (Weedman, 2014). This area of science provides researchers with the ability to solve numerous real-world problems, which leads to advances in many areas of science including gene therapy and various agriculture practices. For example, a recent study wanted to find the best way to eliminate threats of insects to crops in order to increase food production (Sharma et al. 2004). By using genetic transformation, the experimenters in this study were able to genetically alter crops so that they would be resistant to most common threats (Sharma et al. 2004). As the example proved, genetic transformation is a highly utilized tool that is continually advancing and improving the world around us.

In order for the glowing to take place, arabinose must be present. The vector of this transformation will be pGLO, which contains GFP and a gene for resistance to ampicillin. The ampicillin is necessary to the experiment in order to see transformed cells (Weedman, 2014). The goal of this experiment is to see whether or not Escherichia coli will undergo genetic transformation with pGLO. Experiments similar this one are important because they help researchers to better understand how bacteria behaves.
