The first of the 5 steps to reading is phonic awareness, which is “the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in spoken words” (Armbruster, Lehr, Osborn, Adler, & National Institute for Literacy (U.S.), 2009, p.1). For a word to be a word, it is originally composed of smaller units named phonemes. Phonemic awareness is the first step to reading, and is a significant achievement for students at a young age. Phonemic awareness includes children being able to change phonemes in words, and then understand that then changes the meaning. Phonemic awareness is the process of manipulating spoken language. The major parts of phonemic awareness for young students are identifying sounds in words, categorizing …show more content…
As always, some students may have not mastered it, and are struggling with the higher components of reading. The way to teach phonemic awareness in my ideal program will be to engage students in different activities that they will find fun and enjoyable while incorporating opportunities to “orally match, isolate, blend, and substitute sounds and to also segment words into sounds” (Tompkins,2014, p.144). Besides the fun enriching activities it will be necessary to incorporate specific lessons, guided practices, and find ways to assess students on phonemic awareness because this is one of the most important steps for students to read. One fun way to get kids brains working on phonemic awareness is to incorporate book and songs. In this ideal program, the teachers’ pay close attention to the diversity and the level of each student through …show more content…
Phonics is a step to reading that can be revisited especially when vocabulary and words become more difficult. For example, students in a lower grade could be focusing on rhyming one syllable words, while children in 3rd grade would focus on learning words with 3 or more syllables or words with silent letters etc. Every time we introduce more difficult content, you must revisit phonological awareness and phonics to ensure students will understand. As a teacher in the ideal program for 3rd grade students its necessary to help students apply what they’ve learned about sounds and letters in different styles of writing, activities, and even reading outload. A plethora of activities and opportunities will be presented through kinesthetic, auditory, visual and tactile differentiation. Assessment is a major key for 3rd grade learners, if students have phonics and phonemic awareness mastered they would be able to successfully come to a new word they are unfamiliar with and sound it out letter by letter, if not then it shows weakness and the teacher is responsible for re teaching it. For kids in the 3rd grade, the ideal reading program will incorporate technology to reach the students wants and make them interested to learn. Phonics in actual terms may not be the easiest to understand when explaining it to students, the best way to get them to understand is just to have them do it in ways that
