Each one of these components are needed to create the reading experience. Children must develop these skills to become a successful reader. The first critical component to reading is Phonics. Phonics is a connection between words and sounds and letter symbols. Phonics can be taught in two ways, synthetic and analytic ("Five Essential Components of Reading," 2013). Synthetic phonic is basically teaching the sounds of letters and then adding the sounds of the letters together to build whole word. Vocabulary is taught in two ways; by someone telling you a word and its meaning or using context clues “hints” to discover a new word. Fluency is when a student or reader can read with speed, accuracy, and expression. Fluency is a combination of multiple reading skills and it can be measured through reading aloud and silent reading.
