For this physical activity intervention program, I have decided to focus on a college age student at SIUE. The goal of this program is to increase physical activity so that they can improve their quality of life and experience all the benefits. The most effective way to increase physical activity is by using behavioral approaches. First, I would have the student develop an exercise contract for themselves and their activity. This will help the person feel more accountable and have them make changes, and stick to them. Being a college student you are very busy and studies show that writing something down will make you more likely to follow through with this and make time during your busy schedule. This promise feels very important to the person and it almost feels like a legal contract that they must uphold. Next, goal setting is a key way to provide motivation for the individual as well as having something to strive for. By having a support system, or partner to exercise with, there can be many benefits. By finding a partner with a similar schedule to you, you can enjoy each other’s company while exercising as well as try new activities with each other. Last, social media has become a huge factor in our society and by using this tool in the right way, you can find extra motivation to attain your goals. For example, using a Fitbit is a great way to compete with friends as well as track your progress every day. For a more cost-effective technique, posting that you completed a workout and getting likes or favorites also will motivate you to keep improving yourself.
