The Pledge of Allegiance and What it Means to United States Citizens

The Pledge of Allegiance should still be appreciated. Numerous citizens of the United States have been in a situation where they have had to recite the Pledge, for example at a ball game, or if you are still in school then you may say it every morning at school. Over the past few years there have been some controversies surrounding the reciting of the Pledge, but there is an underlining significance that cannot be overruled. Many states have already stopped saying the pledge, including schools, or took words out of the pledge to quiet down controversy. One of the most controversial is the fact that students should have to recite the Pledge. For many years, there have been many court cases on this issue. There was even a court case about students who were Jehovah’s Witnesses. “Apparently, in 1940 the court stated that the Minersville Public School District could force students who were Jehovah’s Witnesses to salute the flag and say the pledge.” (The history of legal challenges to the Pledge of Allegiance | Constitution Center, n.d.) After that case settled down there was more that started to pop up, mostly about freedom of speech. “The first case about freedom of speech started in 1943, it was West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette.
