Police Brutality Against African-Americans

Introduction One of the biggest issues that has plagued the Criminal Justice system for countless years now is that of police brutality, especially against ethnic minorities. For this project, I will be focusing on the problem of police brutality against African-Americans, including multiple cases of police officers using force, often deadly, against African-American people. Many persons may not know what exactly is meant by police brutality. As cited in Siegel and Worrall, page 142, police brutality ‘usually involves such actions as the use of abusive language, the unnecessary use of force or coercion, threats, prodding with nightsticks, stopping and searching people to harass them, and so on.' Police brutality has been a problem since the creation of regulated police forces and have discriminated against majority of racial minority groups. In recent years, there has been a surge of police violence against African-Americans happening all over the United States of America and many of these incidents resulted in the death of the civilian.

From the time Zimmerman hung up the phone call at 7:15 pm to the police arriving on the scene at 7:17 pm, only four minutes had elapsed. When the police got to the scene of the crime, Martin was already fatally wounded by a gunshot wound to the chest. From the very beginning of the investigation, Zimmerman never denied killing Martin. Instead he told investigators he acted in self-defense and was not arrested right away since Florida has a "Stand Your Ground" law in place. The Guardian reports that after national outcry about this case, the US Justice Department announced that it would investigate the case, along with the
