Alannah Downs March 23, 2024 Professor Anderson CRIT 201 Police Brutality and Racism Police Brutality has stemmed many years ago, and unfortunately still exists today. Americans of all races, any gender, and any class have endured police brutality. Although the great majority of police brutality is African Americans, they are the ones who have been subjected to it the most. The Great Migration shaped African American’s and urban police departments interactions with one another. Most white communities, including police departments, were not used to the presence of African Americans, which led to them reacting with fear and hostility. George Floyd’s case also allowed people to open their eyes and see America’s criminal justice system as being racially oppressed and dehumanizing people of color. While black people only account for 13% of the country, they make up the largest proportion of the prisons, with that being 33%. They are also three times more likely to be killed by police than white people. Black Lives Matter springs into action with “defunding the police,” which calls for reevaluating the budget for law enforcement. For example, Los Angeles and multiple other cities cut police budgets and planned to reinvest that money to community programs which included supportive housing, violence prevention, and other services. Minneapolis, which was where George Floyd was killed, completely disregarded everything and instead spent $6.4 million recruiting more officers. However, Minneapolis made commitments to reduce police presence in schools. Citizens would also suggest changes to the ballot box, suggesting ways to strengthen the law enforcement nationwide. States also responded to this change, and over 30 states called for police
