Brainless, foolish, and corrupt - sadly this is what will describe our society 50 years from now. With the use of technology, film media, and audio readers increasing our society will slowly degrade reading in the coming generations. This claim has also lead E.B White to say the same “In schools and colleges, in these audio visual-day’s, doubt has been raised as to the future of reading - whether the printed word is on its last leg (White).” As our world is constantly making advancements, it is killing the printed word. This printed word can be anything from books to magazines. As we all know our present day technology is very distracting. The majority of us have our phones filled with music and gaming apps. By watching these videos, it takes people’s attention away from reading. Youtube videos may not always provide accurate information. If a student uses a Youtube video to obtain information, it will most likely be inaccurate. However, many students will turn to this method simply because it saves them time and effort.
Audio readers pose another problem for our generation, hearing the contents of a book being read to you does not have the same impact as being able to visualize the words yourself. If a person does not have the opportunity to look at a physical printed document, it will not be embedded into one’s memory as well as it would be when they read it themselves. Another problem with audio readers is the fact that after long periods of listening to recordings, it begins to damage diminish one’s hearing. Audio readers are replacing books because they are more convenient to listen to.
Brainless, foolish, and corrupt- these are the adjectives that will be used to describe our society 50 years from now if we do not do something now to stop it. We must read printed work, we must analyze literature that has been passed down to us. The age of technology will hurt us much more than it will help us if we continue to let it control the way we learn. Reading books should never become an ancient art, our society needs to read to stay knowledgeable and
