I believe that presidential debates do matter to some length and can make a small effect on the race. It could help raise polls even for little, especially if it was a close race. Many people tend to judge the candidates through these debates whether it's their argument, image and body language. For example the first ever presidential debate, There was John Kennedy who looked very composed and represented, while Richard Nixon who looked bad and sweaty because he refused to put on make-up which made him seem angry and not as charming as Kennedy.

However, sometimes this is not the case because some people have officially decided on which candidate they will be voting for. The debated may give a couple of more bits of data to those who are on the fence. Moreover, Individuals tend to cheer their picked applicant. The applicants can to a great extent control how they perform in the open deliberations. They can be arranged, sorted out and prepared to handle any assault.
