Changes in the Purpose of Education
The purpose of American schooling does not have a sole purpose, aim or goal but several purposes which should include and not be limited to acquiring general knowledge, developing thinking and social skills, and preparing adolescence for responsible adult life. School emerged as, "the failure of particular institutions such as the family, church, and community (failed) to provide the necessary tool demanded by the conditions of a new and emerging society."1 It seems as if every few year eras societies reasons for education its masses changed along with the state and nature of the society of the time.
