Before she died Sal’s mother went on a long road trip and passed during her trip. Sal’s grandparents decided to take Sal on the exact same road trip her mother went on before she passed. This is how Sal learned more about her mother. As you can see Sal is dedicated to get answers about her mother. Walt is not like most kids. This shows his knowledge, skill and survival and means he is prepared for anything. He lives in the Klondike during the gold rush which sets up the story and sets the stakes high for Walt. This setting helps to emphasize the plot and the story. Walt Masters is a boy of 14 who is brave and courageous. This is partly what caused Walt to take the action he did. Walt went out of his way to save a neighbor's gold claim from stampeders. Stampeders are people who jump gold claims and take them for themselves. This shows that Walt is not afraid of most things and he is not afraid to take action.
