ROCHESTER-- A few hours before, President Ronald Reagan delivered his State of the Union Address, uttering the powerful words: “Freedom is not the sole prerogative of a chosen few; it is the universal right of all God’s children” (Reagan). In his speech, Mr. Reagan, according to his newly formed Reagan Doctrine, challenges communism worldwide, “on every continent, from Afghanistan to Nicaragua” (“The ‘Reagan Doctrine’ is Announced”).
In the aforementioned Third World country of Nicaragua, the Communist Sandinistas have seized power in Nicaragua on July 19, 1979, banning elections and arresting businesspeople and those of the Catholic Church who attempted to voice their dissent, after claiming an alleged national state of emergency (Pangandoyon).

While whether Mr. Reagan has permitted the CIA to aid the Contras following the Boland Amendment continues to be up for debate, the Reagan Doctrine demonstrates Reagan’s dedication to the preservation of the First World ways, life as we know it.
In such times of desperate measures, when Soviets threaten to eliminate the very existence of democracy in the budding Third World, how could we--the protectors of freedom--passibly stand by? The Reagan Doctrine not only has upgraded the Truman Doctrine but also reaffirms our American ideals. We of the First World must prevent the spread of communism in the susceptible nations worldwide lest the Soviets seize the remnants of the Third World and annihilate our American Way.
Overall, Mr. Reagan has done laudable work for being capable of reigniting our motivation to combat communism. As for his mistakes in the Iran-Contra Affair, Reagan has only made himself more honorable, for to be able to forsake one’s pride and image as a leader to protect one’s people, such is the virtue of an admirable
