Reflective Essay: A Career As A Writer

After completing English 103 and several CAPS workshops, I learned many useful things that I will carry throughout my academic career. Some of the things I have improved in are revising and drafting, formulating a thesis, and correctly citing sources. Before Spelman, I did not know what a proper thesis was. In the past I would look at a template before every essay I wrote to complete it. Now I can genuinely claim that I know and understand how to write a thesis. Also, before college, I thought I understood MLA format but upon arriving at Spelman it was clear that I did not know. For that, I am grateful I was set on the right path and taught how to display MLA format which includes citing for sources.
For sections B and C, I choose essays I completed my first semester. For section B what was chosen was a critical essay for ADW titled, The Differences and Similarities between Marcus Garvey and W.E.B. DuBois, because I genuinely enjoyed the topic and I felt that it displayed my strength of research and analyzation within the paper. Next, for section C I chose a research paper for English 103 about Barbara Jordan, the reason I chose that essay was because I never wrote an essay about a person that long and I thought it was a good chance to display how it taught me how to be more detailed on

My weaknesses in writing include grammar/mechanics and revising. As I continued to go to the Writing Center for tutoring I realized that I would have less problems if I just spent more time viewing closely at my work. To improve on these skills, I will continue going to the Writing Center for tutoring because it helped me immensely this year. As a writer, I do not know what my specific strengths are but as I continue throughout my academic career I hope to become a superior writer because as of now I am not impressed with my writing.
