The Challenge

Did you know that the average person can hold their breath for 30-40 seconds? How long can you hold your breath? The challenge: try holding your breath for 60 seconds… Go. Did you really try it? If you did and you’re like me the first 25-30 seconds didn’t seem too bad. When you hit 40-45 seconds, major doubts started to set in as you felt your lungs start to burn with desperate need for air. Once you victoriously hit 60, you took in air as fast as you could to find relief! Nicely done.
I bet you’re pretty proud to be above average in your ability to hold your breath. Maybe you will even challenge others to see if they can match your superior breath holding abilities… But what if I told you, I lied… Well, not completely. The average person in a panicked state can hold their breath for 30-40 seconds. The average person in a restful state can hold their breath for about 2 minutes. Do you want to try it again?

We either swing one way or the other and it is hard to find the balance between the two. This book is about finding that balance. I believe that balance is found by looking at what should be our heartbeat in ministry. Our center focus. And it should be something that isn’t affected by shifting factors of attendance, how well your lesson was or how well you speak. It is determined by this one thing and then everything else springs off of that. The question that should be at the heart of youth ministry is this, what kind of teen is your youth ministry producing? What kind of teen do you want to produce? Are you producing teens that leave with a passion for Jesus? Are you producing teens that have a heartbeat for the gospel and to see others saved? Are you cultivating a love for God’s Word in their hearts and an understanding on how to read His
