Studies have shown that middle and high school students with adequate amounts of sleep, 8-10 hours, have better test scores, but if school starts so early, students won’t get the 8-10 hours of sleep they need. ”Thomas Conrad, principal of the 1,000-plus student school in North Eastham, said the preliminary findings show that with the 8:30 a.m. start time, there has been a 53 percent drop in the number of failing grades”. Parents always say that early school start times improves grades, but later school start times might help meet their needs by allowing students to get those few extra hours of sleep. Therefore, allowing school to start later in the morning could prevent dropping grades and sleepless nights. In conclusion, having school start later in the morning will improve lack of sleep and absences. Allowing students to get those few extra hours of sleep will drastically help and or improve student’s and parent’s needs. Student’s lack of sleep and missing school are just a few reasons why school hours should be pushed back to later in the morning.
