Monday - My client ran outside to recess and cut in front of many other students; reversing this type of inappropriate running is one of our goals together. After speaking to him about this behavior, one of the lunch aides told him that he can, essentially, run outside to recess whenever he feels like it and that other students should “get out of his way”. This was rather frustrating for, although it did not affect me for the entirety of work, and I was able to go to the gym afterwards which was helpful in minimizing my stress. As a result, he missed the entire lesson and became extremely upset at the end of class when they were being tested on the material covered that day. I was particularly frustrated by this situation because, after reflecting with my client about why he did not learn and getting him to acknowledge his responsibility in the matter, an aid passing by who saw that he was upset told him that it was his teacher’s fault and not his. I believe this idea applies to a wide variety of aspects in our personal and professional lives. To use an example I feel represents a metaphor for life in general: when we fly on airplanes, during the initial safety message before take-off we are instructed to put our oxygen masks on prior to putting on anyone else's in case of an emergency. We must take care of ourselves before we share ourselves with the world as we can only share what we have.
