A servant leader is an individual that has a desire to serve and better others. The need comes within one because they care. You must be aware of the situations around you and make the best of them. Beth Fahlberg and Robert Toomey said, “Nurses also lead by listening to patients and families, and then advocating for them at the bedside, in the boardroom, in public discourse on social media, and in policy forums such as congressional hearings.” (Servant Leadership: A Model for Emerging Nurse Leaders, 2016, p. 50).
There are five key practices for servant leaders: develop your vision, listen and learn before speaking and acting, envision and invest in others’ greatness, give away your power, and build community by cultivating strategic relationships (Beth Fahlberd, 2016). This semester, I have learned to listen before I speak and act and to invest into others. I keep an open mind, as I cannot say what is best for the patient, only they know what they want. She couldn’t cut it because of her religion, and it was longer than her waist line (mind you it is knotted up just below the ear). She was upset because nobody would even try to save the length of her hair, they just told her to cut it off, there was no hope. Her husband was taking care of the kids, the farm, and working so he did not have time to visit her, and I was the first one to sit down with her and have a normal conversation. It was by listening to her that I could understand her situation, and plan the best care for her while she was in my care. If I hadn’t learned why she didn’t want to cut her hair, I wouldn’t have understood her reasoning of why I should try to detangle it.
