Greenleaf believed that servant-leaders are most concerned with serving people first. Servant-first leaders are the opposite of leader-first leaders, who are more focused on power and material wealth. By having the desire to serve first, servant-leaders place the needs of others before their own needs. In an organization, this means that servant-leaders strive to help team members perform at optimal levels. Servant-leaders will also ensure the well-being of team members and assist in their personal and professional development. Additionally, servant-leaders are typically excellent communicators. If everyone is working together to obtain the goals then we can all be successful. I think that it is important to listen to my employees and show them they are important and give feedback when necessary. Followers will come in and be frustrated by a problem and vent a little, and that is okay. I let them vent and then ask them what three ideas they have come up with to fix the situation. We together come up with a solution. I seek to motivate my team through emphasizing the human relation. People oriented leaders still focus on the task and the results; they just achieve them through different means. Leaders with a people focus will have behaviors that are in line with: Encouraging, Observing, Listening, Coaching and Mentoring (Carnegie). I started in the retail store and have a lot of knowledge of the real-world scenarios my followers face. I understand the struggles of working with the public and having healthy goals to attain. I can empathize with what my team is feeling and really be tuned in. If I notice someone isn’t their usual self I will take them to lunch so we can talk.
