Servant Leadership and the Greater Good
Throughout history, servant leaders have been at the forefront of successful organizations. They serve and empower others to lead with great purpose and take part in the transformation of civilization through positive community change. Servant leaders believe their job is to build and support others, nurturing future servant leaders. Greenleaf (1970) believed servant leaders, “want to serve, to serve first.” They inspire and motivate followers through their actions and words and put emphasis on the needs and desires of others and place them over their own. Servant leadership, is a leadership style which can be described as selflessly giving of oneself and according to Greenleaf, is a “philosophy and a set of principle that enrich the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world” (Center for Servant Leadership, n.d.). Greenleaf recognized that organizations as well as individuals could be servant leaders.

LifeStream is a nonprofit organization founded in 1951, as the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. In 2008, the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, decided to change its name, in order to accurately reflect the range of services offered and its expanding geographical service area (LifeStream, n.d.). LifeStream currently provides blood products and services to more than 80 hospitals in five different countries, throughout southern California.
