The teaching of Romeo and Juliet has iconically caused kids to nod off in class and even skip out on class in hopes of not having to read it. Why? Because Shakespearean language has become extremely archaic, with his writings being over 400 years old, and awfully hard to comprehend. This has brought up the controversial question of whether or not it should be used in the curriculum. Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet should not be used in 9th grade Language Arts syllabus because it is outdated with so many other modern artists doing the same work and is extremely frustrating for the students who have trouble understanding the text.
