Fraternities and Sororities have been a constant in regards to American college life; however, it is debatable whether they have had a positive or negative impact. While there are accounts of life long friends, study groups, and volunteer work, greek life also has a reputation riddled with partying, racism, and illegal activity. The rest of the country has now been subjected to the tasteless behaviours of fraternties and sororites, to the point of questioning whether the problems are really outweighing the benefits; consequently multiple colleges have forbidden greek life on their campuses. Being in a fraternity means living in a house with your peers, some you might not even life; yet this is only helping the students learn how to deal with others, something they will have to do in their future place of work. While ones “brother and sister” are helpful for having a go to study session group or workout buddy, many friendships from greek life continue out of college and into real world. The people around you can be thought of as resources, they can help you in the present and in the future as long as you take care of them; this is an invaluable gift people outside of fraternities and sororities could not get (Dara).
