First, according to Justin O'Neill's article Should School Start Later "An ordinary teen must have eight and a half hours of sleep." He tells us this, because a teen might not think well without the recommended amount of sleep (20). Schools give homework and have after school activities. By the time most students get back from their activity, they probably won't have enough time for homework. This could lead to students staying up later to finish their homework. After six hours they will have to get up again. This could lead to fatigue and tired bodies. Having enough energy for the day is important. Students could get diverted during classes. Their mind would be on sleeping and getting more rest. Schools that have later start times have showed an improvement of grades. Heather Macintosh says, "Well rested kids learn better" (20-21). She probably informs us about this because learning in school is important. If kids don't get good grades they could flunk a subject.
