Every four years when the Summer Olympics come around, many people enjoy watching gymnastics. Although, those people may not know much or anything about the sport it is enjoyable to watch, people who watched the 2016 Summer Olympics may have noticed one dominating gymnast from the United States, Simone Biles. Simone Biles is an African American gymnast from Spring, Texas who was raised by her grandparents. Simone went on to win fourteen world medals, competed a skill named after her in the Olympics, and won five Olympic medals in Rio. Because of Simone’s amazing accomplishments, awards, and skills Simone is the best gymnast in the United States.
The first reason Simone is the best gymnast in United States is because she has won fourteen championship medals. She has won the most world medals in United States history. According to USA Gymnastics, Simone “Has won 14 world medals(10 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze), which is the most in U.S history.” (USA) Many people struggle getting to worlds, yet winning a medal, yet winning 14 medals, with 10 being gold. In the 2016 Summer Olympics, Simone competed a skill she made up and was named after her. Simone created her own skill called “The Biles” a tumbling pass performed on the floor exercise. According to Mental Floss, “American gymnast Simone Biles first performed this move a double layout with a 180 degree half turn at the end.” (Mental) Many people can’t do a single backflip yet two back backflips in a layout position, and then an additional half twist. Later on in the article the author goes on to say, “ you might spot this pass when Biles takes her turn on the floor in Rio.” To get to the Olympics is one thing, but to then compete a very challenging skill that few people in the world can do in front of millions of people watching is a whole different thing.
