Social work is a unique profession that has the power to make a difference. Social workers help families and individuals find solution to their problem, bring communities together, promote social justice, make changes to policies and many more. For the purpose of this paper, I interviewed my supervisor, Ms. Jolly, at the nursing home I am interning at to find out why she choose social work as a profession.
My supervisor, Ms. Jolly, become a social worker because she wanted to help the less fortunate. She stated she grew up in a country where there was no access to quality health care and where healthy food was not affordable. Her day to day activities including identifying the patients psychosocials, mental, emotional needs when they get admitting to the nursing home. In order to meet the needs of each patient, Ms. Jolly as well as other social workers conduct individual and group therapy to help patient adjust to the changes in their health. If the patient is long term and does not get to go home, the social worker help them with end of life care and life changes that is associated with it as well as depression and …show more content…
She gather resources to help the patient get everything he or she needs. She stated that everyday is different. For example, sometime when she walks into her office for the day, she would receive a phone call from the family of a patient complaining that the patient stated that he lost something. Then she would have to go look for the missing item and report it. After that she would hear another patient crying and screaming of pain or a family member in distress after learning that that their significant other’s health has gotten worst and may require long term care or hospice. In these situations she would have to provide counseling to the patient and family members. Then, when she returns to her office, there are patients or family members that need to speak to her about something they need. After handling this, she would have to make phone calls to inform families of when care plan meetings are being held and if they have any concerns about the care plan. Overall, she stated that her day can be busy and it's sometimes hard to get a lot of work
