The first time Charlie found a sense of belonging was when he sat next to Patrick when he went to a football game. Patrick recognized him from their shop class and appreciated that Charlie called him by his name instead of calling him Nothing. Patrick was kind to Charlie and Sam, Patrick’s stepsister, was also welcoming when she joined the group. Following the game they went to King’s Diner to celebrate their team winning the football game. Their conversation flowed and Charlie felt comfortable with Patrick and Sam. He ended the nigh by paying their food bill in another attempt at acceptance (Chbosky, 2012).

He promised Patrick he would not share this information with anyone. Charlie was raised Catholic and took communion at church services. It can also be assumed that Brad’s family was Catholic because they were also seen at church services. Brad and his family were taught that homosexuality was a sin and that he would go to hell for it (Chbosky, 2012). This was part of their religiosity (Hutchison, 2013). Despite Charlie’s congruent upbringing he remained neutral and nonjudgmental toward Patrick and Brad. This stems from how he doesn’t want people to judge him so he chooses to not judge others. The Rocky Horror Picture Show and listening to music in the tunnel are also part of his spirituality. They are part of his own self-expression of his spirituality because “in this moment [he] is infinite” (Chbosky,
