If you were told to take your hands off the wheel, and shut your eyes while driving, would you do it? No, I’m sure you wouldn’t. It’s very dangerous to drive without your eyes and hands on the wheel. Why would you do it while texting? In fact, it has been tested and that texting while driving is just as worse as drunk driving. As a result of all these factors texting while driving is tied in with the top three reason for car accidents.
Your eyes are very important while driving. They help you react to what’s going on in the world outside your car. You can see the car in front of you, beside you, and behind you. If you lost your sight you wouldn’t be able to drive. Not only are you putting yourself in danger but you’re putting those around you in a bad situation as well if you remove your eyes from the road. You’re taking your eyes off the road for a short period of time every time you decide to read or send a text. You may not think a few seconds of looking down at your phone would do any harm but it has been said “if you take your eyes off the road for 5 seconds while driving at 55 mph then it is the equivalent to driving the length of a football field while blindfolded,”

It’s been going on for much longer than texting and driving has. However, texting and driving has been proven “to be like drinking four beers,” (Masters). Imagine that, drinking four beers is like texting while driving. Accidents due to drinking have been decreasing over the years though and texting and driving accidents have been increasing, (Masters). I know some may not want to believe that, but it has been tested and proven. The thing with drinking and driving though is while driving drunk your eyes are on the road.
